Frequently Asked Questions about Zoom! Teeth Whitening
What exactly is Zoom!?
Zoom! is a process that safely bleaches your teeth in order to lighten the discoloration of the enamel and dentin. This solution has been used on the TV show ‘Extreme Makeover’.
How long does the whitening process take?
The entire procedure takes approximately one hour from start to finish. It begins with a preparation period of about 15 minutes followed by roughly 45 minutes of bleaching. Teeth cleaning is recommended prior to your whitening session.
How does the Zoom! in-office system work?
When you choose the Zoom! method, your teeth are covered with a specially formulated whitening gel, the active ingredient in which is Hydrogen Peroxide. As this is broken down, oxygen is able to enter the dentin and enamel which causes it to bleach any discoloured areas without effecting the structure of the tooth.
The Zoom! light that is also used to help activate the hydrogen peroxide and allow it to penetrate the surface of the tooth. Studies have shown that using this light increases the effectiveness of the gel by 26% or more, giving you an average improvement of up to eight shades.
What can I expect from the Zoom! experience?
When you are having your teeth whitened, you have the option of comfortably watching television or listening to music. Please note that individuals with a sensitive gag reflex or anxiety may not be able to complete the entire procedure in one sitting. For those who experience tooth sensitivity throughout the treatment, we can apply a desensitising agent and reduce the intensity of the light.
How long can I expect the results to last?
If you follow the simply post-whitening care instructions that we provide you with following your session, your teeth will always remain lighter than they were before. To keep them looking their best, we recommend flossing and brushing your teeth twice a day, as well as maintaining occasional touch ups at home every 12-24 months. These at-home kits are specially formulated to keep your teeth their brightest and are only available through your dental professional.
Are there any potential side effects to the treatment?
Some patients may experience some sensitivity throughout the procedure and discomfort can occur due to the small amount of heat that the light generates. It is also possible that you will experience minor tingling sensations immediately after the procedure, however this is rare and they always dissipate after a short amount of time. If you are aware that you have sensitive teeth, we can provide you with custom-moulded plastic trays and anti-sensitivity toothpaste for use before you come in for the procedure.
What can cause tooth discolouration?
There are many lifestyle factors that can contribute to the gradual discolouration of your teeth. The most common causes include aging and consumption of substances such as tea, colas, coffee, tobacco, red wine and other staining liquids. In addition to this, consumption of tetracycline, excessive fluoride or certain antibiotic treatments may also cause discolouration if used during the tooth formation period.
Is it common for people to whiten their teeth?
Many people now turn to teeth whitening in order to get the bright smile they want. Plus, the Zoom! system makes it easier than ever as it can be achieved in one small session.
Who can benefit from this procedure?
Almost anyone can enjoy the benefits of this teeth whitening process. However, results can vary from person to person. Your dental professional will determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for the procedure by conducting an oral exam, including a shade assessment of your teeth.
Is this procedure safe?
It certainly is. An extensive amount of research and clinical studies have indicated that teeth whitening procedures performed by a dentist or completed at home in line with a dentist’s recommendations is compete safe. As with any tooth whitening product however, Zoom! is not recommended for children under the age of 13 or any person who is pregnant or lactating.
