Brushing your teeth well everyday combined with regular visits to the dentists is the best way to maintain good oral health and teeth. Dentists are also there to look after our teeth with fillings, crowns and professional cleaning should any problems arise, but as the old saying goes –prevention is better than cure. As with our overall health, you are what you eat, and that fact affects our dental health much more as it’s our first and most important point of contact with food.
So which foods are good for your teeth? And which ones are bad? Thankfully, even candy and other foodstuffs that are bad for our teeth are usually harmless if enjoyed in moderation, but some do more harm than others. What You Eat Matters – Foods that are Good for our Teeth
Most people will have a good idea of the foods that are bad for your teeth, but naming the ones that are good for dental health may be a bit trickier. Teeth friendly foods include many surprises that can improve dental health:
- Apples: Apples can be a bit sweet but their benefit comes from having lots of fibre and water, which along with the saliva produced in our mouth when eating can help to stimulate gums and rinse away food particles and bacteria.
- Cheese: Research has found that eating cheese increases the PH levels in our mouths, which lowers the risk of tooth decay.
- Carrots: Carrots work in much the same way as apples because they also contain a lot of crunchy fibre.
- Green Vegetables: Leafy greens such as kale and lettuce are high in vitamins and calcium, which builds enamel for our teeth.
- Almonds: Almonds are low in sugar and are another good source of calcium.
- Celery: Many people may not enjoy eating celery but this vegetable can act as a natural toothbrush thanks to its high levels of water, fibre, and the antioxidants vitamin A and C.
Foods that are Bad for your Teeth
The most common foodstuffs that are bad for our teeth tend to contain a lot of sugar, a list topped by candy, fizzy beverages and energy drinks. However there are more innocuous foods that also have the potential to harm our dental health; too much citrus can be detrimental to your teeth for example, and sticky foods tend to stay on tooth surfaces for much longer. Other food types to consume in moderation include crunchy snacks as they have a lot more starch which can get trapped between teeth, and those that can stain your teeth such as tea or coffee.
Above all, the best way to begin looking after your teeth is by enjoying a healthy diet. Regular brushing and visiting the dentist are the tools that help us to maintain that.
